Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Whipped Spider Web Rose is a beautiful decorative embroidery technique that creates a raised, textured flower resembling a delicate rose. This lovely stitch begins with a foundation of straight stitches arranged like the spokes of a wheel. The working thread is then whipped around the spokes, gradually forming soft, rounded petals that build into a charming little rose. Unlike the Spider Web Rose worked with silk ribbon, this variation uses embroidery threads to create a more compact, finely textured flower. It's a wonderful addition to floral samplers, decorative borders, and traditional counted needlework.
In this intermediate counted embroidery course, you'll learn how to create these delightful little roses on linen. I'll show you how to position the foundation stitches accurately, whip your thread around the spokes, and maintain just the right tension to form a beautifully shaped flower. You'll discover how the layers gradually build up to create a lovely three-dimensional effect.
You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small embroidery pattern to practise your new skills. Try experimenting with different thread colours and textures to create roses that complement your favourite needlework designs.
This course is intended for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen. If you're new to linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Although the rose itself is formed by whipping threads around a foundation, accurate stitch placement helps create a balanced, attractive result.
Bring along your doodle cloth and join me as we explore the Whipped Spider Web Rose together! Enjoy watching a little rose blossom beneath your needle, one graceful round at a time. Feel free to share your stitching progress and finished flowers on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
