Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Spider Web Rose, sometimes called the Woven Spider Web Rose, is a beautiful silk ribbon embroidery technique that creates a soft, dimensional flower resembling a delicate rose. Despite its unusual name, this lovely stitch has nothing to do with spiders! Instead, it begins with a foundation of straight stitches arranged like the spokes of a wheel. Silk ribbon is then woven over and under these spokes, gradually building up the petals of a charming little rose. The finished flower has a wonderfully textured appearance, making it a favourite for floral embroidery, decorative samplers, and romantic needlework designs.
In this intermediate silk ribbon embroidery course, you'll discover how to create these delightful roses using simple weaving techniques. I'll show you how to prepare the foundation stitches, weave your ribbon carefully around the centre, and shape the petals to give your rose a soft, natural appearance. You'll also learn how to control the ribbon's tension so your flowers look full and beautifully rounded.
You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics. Once you've mastered the technique, try experimenting with different ribbon colours and widths to create roses in a variety of sizes and shades. Spider Web Roses look especially lovely when surrounded by embroidered leaves, delicate stems, and other silk ribbon flowers.
You don't need to know counted cross stitching on linen to enjoy this course. Silk ribbon embroidery allows you to work freely on your fabric, creating beautiful three-dimensional designs without counting threads.
Gather your favourite silk ribbons and join me as we create a Spider Web Rose together on a doodle cloth! There's something especially satisfying about watching a beautiful little flower emerge from a few simple stitches. Enjoy the process, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished roses on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
