Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The French Knot is one of the most charming and useful stitches in traditional surface embroidery. This tiny, raised knot adds wonderful texture and dimension to your needlework, especially when worked with beautiful silk ribbon. French Knots are perfect for creating flower centres, delicate buds, clusters of blossoms, and other decorative details. By varying the size of your knots and the colours of your ribbon, you can create lovely effects that bring your floral embroidery to life.
In this intermediate embroidery course, you'll learn how to create neat, attractive French Knots using floss. Although this stitch looks simple, controlling the wraps and tension takes a little practice. I'll show you how to wrap the floss around your needle, hold it securely, and gently draw the needle through to form a beautifully shaped tiny knot.
You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics. Once you've mastered the technique, you'll discover how French Knots can be combined with other silk ribbon stitches to create charming flowers, textured borders, and delightful accents in your embroidery.
You don't need to know counted cross stitching on linen to enjoy this course. Silk ribbon embroidery allows you to work freely on the surface of your fabric, creating beautiful designs without counting threads. If you've already tried a few basic ribbon stitches, the French Knot is a wonderful addition to your growing collection of techniques.
Bring along your doodle cloth and join me as we explore the French Knot together! Enjoy practising these delightful little knots, and don't worry if your first few have a mind of their own. With a little patience, they'll soon become one of your favourite embroidery stitches. Feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
