Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Herringbone Stitch is a lovely traditional embroidery stitch that creates a decorative pattern of crossed diagonal stitches, resembling the bones of a fish. This versatile stitch has been used for centuries in embroidery and decorative needlework, particularly for borders, bands, and geometric designs. Its open, interlacing appearance adds beautiful texture to samplers, and it looks especially attractive when worked with colourful silk or other specialty threads.
In this beginner counted embroidery course, you'll discover how a simple sequence of diagonal stitches can create such an elegant pattern. I'll show you how to count your fabric threads accurately, work the stitches in the correct order, and maintain even spacing and tension. Once you've learned the basic technique, you can experiment with different stitch widths, thread colours, and arrangements to create a variety of decorative effects.
You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern to practise your new skills. Herringbone Stitch is particularly useful for creating attractive borders and bands, and it combines beautifully with other counted embroidery stitches.
This course is intended for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen. If you're new to linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Once you're familiar with counting fabric threads, you'll find that the Herringbone Stitch is an enjoyable and rewarding technique to learn.
Join me with your doodle cloth as we explore the Herringbone Stitch together! Have fun watching the crisscross pattern develop as you work, and enjoy adding another lovely traditional stitch to your embroidery skills. You're always welcome to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
