Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Algerian Eyelet Stitch, or the Star Stitch, is a beautiful traditional counted embroidery stitch that creates a delicate, star-shaped design with a tiny opening in the centre. Worked with straight stitches that radiate toward a central point, this attractive stitch is part of the family of pulled-thread embroidery techniques. As the stitches are gently drawn together, they create a small eyelet without cutting the fabric. Algerian Eyelets add lovely texture and delicate openwork effects to samplers, decorative borders, and other counted needlework projects.
In this intermediate counted embroidery course, you'll learn how to create neat, evenly spaced Algerian Eyelets while working on linen. I'll show you how to count your fabric threads accurately, follow the correct stitching sequence, and use just enough tension to create the characteristic little opening in the centre. The secret is to pull the threads gently and consistently, allowing the eyelet to form naturally without distorting the surrounding fabric.
You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern to practise your new skills. Once you've mastered the technique, try arranging several eyelets in rows or decorative groups to create beautiful geometric patterns.
This course is designed for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen. If you're new to linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Understanding how to count fabric threads will make learning this delicate specialty stitch much easier.
Bring along your doodle cloth and join me as we explore the Algerian Eyelet Stitch together! Enjoy watching those tiny openings appear as you stitch, and discover how a simple arrangement of straight stitches can create such a lovely effect. Feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
