Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Bullion Knot, sometimes called the Coil Stitch, Worm Stitch, or Post Stitch, is a beautiful traditional embroidery stitch that creates a raised, coiled shape resembling a tiny spring. Formed by wrapping thread around the needle several times before drawing it through, this decorative stitch adds wonderful texture and dimension to your needlework. Bullion Stitches are especially popular for creating delicate roses, flower petals, leaves, and other floral details. They can also be used to create interesting borders and textured accents in samplers.
In this intermediate counted embroidery course, you'll learn how to form neat, even Bullion Stitches while working on linen. The secret lies in controlling the wraps around your needle and keeping the tension comfortable as you draw the thread through. I'll guide you through the technique step by step, helping you create beautifully shaped coils without twisting or tangling your thread.
You'll enjoy easy-to-follow video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small embroidery pattern to practise your new skills. Once you've mastered the basic Bullion Stitch, you'll discover how varying the number of wraps and the length of your stitches can create different decorative effects.
If you're unfamiliar with counted stitching on linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Although Bullion Stitches are often used in free-form embroidery, they also make lovely additions to counted needlework designs.
Join me with your doodle cloth as we explore the Bullion Stitch together! This charming stitch takes a little patience to master, but the results are well worth the effort. Enjoy experimenting with your favourite threads, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
