Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Waffle Stitch is a fascinating counted embroidery stitch that creates a beautiful raised, woven effect resembling the textured surface of a waffle. Worked with a series of carefully placed straight stitches that cross and overlap, this decorative stitch produces an intricate geometric pattern with a distinctive dimensional appearance. It's especially attractive when worked with overdyed silk or other specialty threads, making it a wonderful addition to samplers, decorative borders, and counted needlework designs.
In this intermediate counted embroidery course, you'll discover how to create the distinctive woven appearance of the Waffle Stitch by following a specific sequence of overlapping stitches. Although the finished design looks quite complicated, it's built from simple straight stitches placed in just the right order. I'll show you how to count your fabric threads accurately, follow the stitching sequence, and maintain even tension to create a beautifully balanced result.
You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern designed to help you practise your new skills. As you work, you'll see how the overlapping threads gradually form the characteristic raised texture. Experimenting with different thread colours and types can make this lovely stitch even more interesting!
The Waffle Stitch is best suited to stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen. If you're new to linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Once you're confident counting fabric threads, you'll be ready to explore more intricate specialty stitches like this one.
Gather your favourite threads and join me as we practise the Waffle Stitch together on a doodle cloth. Enjoy watching the woven pattern take shape, one stitch at a time, and take pleasure in mastering another beautiful embroidery technique. Feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
