Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Sheaf Stitch is a charming counted embroidery stitch that resembles a little bundle of wheat tied neatly in the middle. Its name comes from the word sheaf, meaning a bundle of grain stalks gathered together. This attractive stitch is created by working a group of parallel straight stitches, then wrapping them with a small horizontal stitch that draws the threads together at the centre. The result is a lovely, textured design that adds a graceful touch to samplers, decorative borders, and floral embroidery.
In this beginner counted embroidery course, you'll discover how a few simple straight stitches can create such an interesting decorative effect. I'll show you how to count your fabric threads accurately, position the stitches evenly, and work the centre wrapping stitch to give your Sheaf Stitch its distinctive gathered appearance. You'll also learn how to maintain gentle, even tension so your little bundles look neat and balanced.
You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern to practise your new skills. Try working several Sheaf Stitches together in a row, or experiment with different thread colours and textures to create attractive decorative patterns.
This course is designed for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen. If you're new to linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Once you're familiar with counting fabric threads, you'll discover how easy it is to add lovely specialty stitches like this one to your needlework.
Bring along your doodle cloth and join me as we learn the Sheaf Stitch together! Enjoy the simple pleasure of turning a few straight stitches into a beautiful little bundle, and have fun experimenting with your favourite threads. You're always welcome to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
