Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Rhodes Butterfly Stitch is a delightful variation of the traditional Rhodes Stitch, creating a beautiful, raised butterfly shape using a series of carefully placed straight stitches. Like other stitches in the Rhodes family, it relies on overlapping threads to build texture and dimension. The finished butterfly has delicate, symmetrical wings and a softly padded appearance that catches the light beautifully. This charming stitch is especially attractive in samplers, garden-themed embroidery, and decorative needlework, where it adds a lovely touch of nature.
In this intermediate counted embroidery course, you'll discover how to create a butterfly using the distinctive overlapping technique of the Rhodes Stitch. Each straight stitch is placed in a particular sequence, gradually building the shape of the wings. I'll show you how to count your fabric threads accurately, follow the stitching sequence, and maintain even tension to achieve a beautifully balanced butterfly.
You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern designed to help you practise your new skills. Once you've mastered the technique, try experimenting with different silk threads and colours to create butterflies with their own unique character!
The Rhodes Butterfly Stitch is best suited to stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen. If you're new to linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Learning to count fabric threads confidently will make these more intricate specialty stitches much easier to enjoy.
Bring along your doodle cloth and join me as we explore the Rhodes Butterfly Stitch together! Enjoy watching those delicate wings take shape, one stitch at a time. Feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
