Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Satin Stitch is one of the most beautiful and versatile stitches in traditional embroidery. Made with smooth, straight stitches placed closely together, it creates a lovely, solid area of colour with a soft, silky sheen. Satin Stitch has been used for centuries to decorate clothing, household linens, and fine needlework. It's especially attractive for filling small shapes, creating flower petals, leaves, hearts, and other decorative motifs. When worked with silk or other specialty threads, the finished stitches catch the light beautifully, adding elegance and texture to your embroidery. This is the basic stitch for Bargello Embroidery.
In this beginner counted embroidery course, you'll learn how to work Satin Stitch on linen, using the fabric threads to guide your stitch placement. Although the technique appears simple, achieving a smooth, even finish takes a little care and practice. I'll show you how to lay your threads neatly beside one another, maintain consistent tension, and create beautifully filled shapes without gaps or overcrowding.
You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons and helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern to practise your new skills. As you become more confident, you'll discover how Satin Stitch can be combined with other counted embroidery stitches to add lovely areas of colour and texture to your samplers.
If you're already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen, you're ready to give Satin Stitch a try! If you're new to linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Learning to count fabric threads accurately will help you place your stitches confidently and achieve a neat, professional-looking finish.
Gather your favourite threads and join me as we practise Satin Stitch together on a doodle cloth. Enjoy watching those smooth, colourful stitches take shape, and remember that a little patience makes all the difference! Feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
