Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Smyrna Cross Stitch, sometimes called the Double Cross Stitch or Leviathan Stitch, is a lovely traditional counted embroidery stitch that creates a full, textured cross with eight points. It combines an ordinary cross stitch with an upright cross worked over the same area, producing a decorative star-like appearance. Named after the ancient city of Smyrna, now Izmir in Turkey, this versatile stitch has long been used in canvas-work and counted embroidery. It's especially attractive in samplers, decorative borders, and geometric designs, where its raised texture adds extra interest.
If you're comfortable working ordinary cross stitches on linen, the Smyrna Cross Stitch is a wonderful next step! In this beginner counted embroidery course, you'll discover how two familiar stitch formations combine to create something quite different. Through easy-to-follow video lessons, I'll guide you through each step, showing you how to position your stitches accurately and maintain even tension for a beautifully balanced result.
You'll also receive helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern to practise your new skills. Try working your Smyrna Crosses in different colours or arranging them in rows to see how this simple stitch can create attractive patterns and interesting textures.
If you haven't yet tried counted stitching on linen, my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course is a great place to begin. Once you understand how to count the fabric threads, you'll find that many beautiful specialty stitches are surprisingly easy to learn.
Bring along your doodle cloth and stitch with me as we explore the Smyrna Cross Stitch together! Take your time, enjoy the process, and have fun discovering another lovely addition to your embroidery skills. You're always welcome to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
