Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Rice Stitch is a lovely traditional counted embroidery stitch that creates a rich, textured pattern using a combination of large cross stitches and smaller diagonal stitches. Also called the William and Mary Stitch, the smaller stitches are worked over the arms of the larger crosses, giving the finished design a distinctive woven appearance. This attractive stitch is especially popular in canvas-work and counted embroidery, where it can be used to create decorative borders, textured fillings, and beautiful accents in samplers.
This beginner counted embroidery course is designed for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen and would like to explore more decorative techniques. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern designed to help you practise your new skills.
One of the pleasures of the Rice Stitch is watching the texture develop as you add the smaller stitches over the larger crosses. I'll show you how to count your fabric threads, place each stitch accurately, and maintain even tension for a neat, attractive finish. You can also experiment with contrasting thread colours to emphasize the woven effect and create interesting patterns.
If you're new to counted stitching on linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Linen offers the flexibility needed for working specialty stitches, allowing you to explore a wonderful variety of decorative embroidery techniques.
Join me as we explore the Rice Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning this charming textured stitch, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
