Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Plait Stitch is a lovely traditional counted embroidery stitch that creates a decorative braided or woven appearance. Its name comes from the word plait, meaning braid, and the finished stitch resembles a neatly interlaced cord. This attractive stitch adds texture and interest to samplers, decorative borders, and other counted needlework projects. When worked with colourful silk or specialty threads, the Plait Stitch creates a beautiful raised effect that catches the light.
This beginner counted embroidery course is designed for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen and would like to explore more decorative techniques. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern designed to help you practise your new skills.
One of the pleasures of the Plait Stitch is watching the braided pattern develop as you work. I'll show you how to count your fabric threads accurately, follow the correct stitching sequence, and maintain even tension to create a neat, consistent appearance. Once you've mastered the basic technique, you'll discover how beautifully this stitch can be combined with other specialty stitches to add texture and variety to your embroidery.
If you're new to counted stitching on linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Linen provides the flexibility needed for many decorative counted stitches, opening the door to a wonderful variety of embroidery techniques.
Join me as we explore the Plait Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning this attractive traditional stitch, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
