Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Fly Stitch is a beautiful and versatile surface embroidery stitch that creates delicate V-shaped or Y-shaped designs. Traditionally worked with embroidery thread, this lovely stitch takes on a soft, graceful appearance when worked with silk ribbon. It's especially useful for creating leaves, flower petals, branching stems, and decorative borders. The natural sheen and softness of silk ribbon add wonderful texture and dimension to your embroidery.
This intermediate embroidery course is designed for stitchers who have some experience with basic surface embroidery and would like to expand their skills. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics. I'll show you how to form the characteristic loops, secure each stitch, and control your ribbon to create beautifully shaped designs.
By adjusting the width and depth of each stitch, you can create pointed leaves, delicate petals, or patterns that resemble fern fronds and trailing vines. You can work individual stitches or join them together to create attractive decorative effects. With a little practice, you'll discover how easily this stitch adds charm and texture to your needlework!
You don't need to know counted cross stitching on linen to enjoy this course. Silk ribbon embroidery allows you to work freely on your fabric without counting threads, giving you plenty of opportunities to experiment with colour, texture, and design.
Join me as we explore the Fly Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning something new, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
