Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Japanese Ribbon Stitch is a lovely decorative embroidery stitch used to create delicate flower petals, leaves, and other natural shapes with silk ribbon. Unlike ordinary embroidery stitches worked with thread, this stitch uses the width and softness of ribbon to create beautiful three-dimensional effects. By bringing the needle through the ribbon itself, you can create a softly curled or pointed tip that gives each petal or leaf its natural appearance. This versatile stitch is especially popular in floral embroidery, where it adds texture, colour, and dimension to your needlework.
This course is designed for stitchers who would like to explore the beauty of silk ribbon embroidery. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Silk Ribbon Basics and Stitching Basics. I'll show you how to work with silk ribbon, control the tension of your stitches, and shape your petals and leaves to create lovely decorative effects.
If you're already familiar with counted cross stitching on linen, you'll enjoy discovering how silk ribbon embroidery adds another dimension to your needlework. Unlike counted stitches, ribbon embroidery allows you to work more freely, creating graceful flowers and leaves with just a few carefully placed stitches. Even if you've never worked with silk ribbon before, you'll soon discover how enjoyable this technique can be!
Join me as we explore the Japanese Ribbon Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning something new, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
