Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Pistil Stitch is a delightful free-form embroidery stitch that creates delicate, raised lines ending in a small, rounded knot. Sometimes called the Long-Tailed French Knot, this charming stitch is a variation of the traditional French Knot, with an extended straight stitch that forms a graceful little stem. It is especially useful in floral embroidery, where it can be used to create flower stamens, tiny buds, and other delicate details. When worked in groups, Pistil Stitches add wonderful texture, movement, and dimension to your needlework. This free form embroidery stitch combines the Straight Stitch and the French Knot. Very versatile for all sorts of areas, it can work well to make stamens, like the ones for the fuchsia, and also looks great as a Queen Anne’s Lace or Dandelion head.
This intermediate free-form embroidery course is designed for stitchers who have some experience with basic surface embroidery and would like to expand their knowledge of decorative stitches. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics. I'll show you how to wrap your thread around the needle, create the distinctive extended knot, and control your tension to produce neat, attractive stitches.
One of the pleasures of the Pistil Stitch is its versatility. By varying the length of the stitch, the number of wraps, or the type of thread you use, you can create a wonderful variety of effects. Short Pistil Stitches make charming little flower centres, while longer stitches can resemble delicate stamens reaching out from a blossom. You can arrange them in clusters, work them along stems, or combine them with other embroidery stitches to create beautiful floral designs. Although the technique requires a little practice, you'll soon discover how these tiny details can bring your embroidery to life!
You don't need to know counted cross stitching on linen to enjoy this course. Free-form embroidery allows you to work creatively on the surface of your fabric without counting threads or following a strict grid. If you've already learned to make French Knots, you'll find the Pistil Stitch a natural and enjoyable next step in developing your embroidery skills.
Join me as we explore the Pistil Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning this lovely decorative stitch, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
