Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

Blackwork Embroidery is a beautiful traditional counted needlework technique known for its delicate geometric patterns, intricate designs, and elegant appearance. Originally popular in England during the Tudor period, Blackwork was often used to decorate clothing, including collars, cuffs, and sleeves. Traditionally worked with black silk thread on white linen, this fascinating embroidery technique uses combinations of straight stitches, backstitches, and double-running stitches to create repeating patterns. Although black thread remains the traditional choice, modern Blackwork can be stitched in many colours, creating lovely decorative effects.
This intermediate counted embroidery course is designed for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen and are ready to explore more intricate embroidery techniques. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small embroidery pattern designed to help you practise your new skills.
One of the pleasures of Blackwork Embroidery is watching an intricate pattern develop from a series of simple, carefully placed stitches. By combining geometric shapes and repeating motifs, you can create beautiful borders, delicate fillings, and decorative designs. I'll show you how to count your fabric threads accurately, follow a Blackwork pattern, and maintain even tension for a neat, attractive finish. Although Blackwork patterns may look complicated at first, you'll soon discover how satisfying they are to stitch!
If you're new to counted stitching on linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Linen is especially suitable for Blackwork because its evenly woven threads allow you to count and place each stitch accurately. Once you're comfortable stitching on linen, you'll find that Blackwork opens up a wonderful world of geometric patterns and creative possibilities.
Join me as we explore Blackwork Embroidery together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy discovering how simple stitches can combine to create such beautiful and intricate designs, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
