Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Scotch Stitch, sometimes called the Cushion Stitch, is a traditional counted embroidery stitch that creates a lovely textured square using a series of straight stitches of varying lengths. The stitches are arranged diagonally, increasing and then decreasing in length to fill a square area. When worked individually or in groups, Scotch Stitches create attractive geometric patterns with a smooth, slightly raised appearance. This versatile stitch is especially popular in canvas-work and counted needlework, where it can be used to fill larger areas, create decorative borders, or add interesting texture to samplers.
This beginner counted embroidery course is designed for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen and would like to expand their knowledge of specialty stitches. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern designed to help you practise your new skills.
One of the pleasures of the Scotch Stitch is its simple, orderly construction. By working a sequence of diagonal stitches across the fabric, you'll see a neat little square gradually take shape. I'll show you how to count the fabric threads, vary the length of each stitch, and maintain even tension to achieve a smooth, attractive finish. Once you've mastered the basic Scotch Stitch, you can experiment with different colours and thread types, or arrange groups of stitches to create fascinating geometric patterns. It's a wonderful way to discover how simple straight stitches can produce beautiful decorative effects.
If you're new to counted stitching on linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. While Aida fabric is wonderful for ordinary cross stitching, linen offers greater flexibility for working specialty stitches. Once you're comfortable counting linen threads, you'll discover a whole new world of decorative embroidery techniques to explore!
Join me as we explore the Scotch Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning this useful traditional stitch, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
