Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Ray Stitch is a lovely counted embroidery stitch that creates a delicate, fan-shaped design with straight stitches radiating from a single point. Its simple construction produces a beautiful effect, especially when worked with colourful silk or other specialty threads. The resulting radiating stitches resemble little sunbursts or sprays of light, making this versatile stitch a wonderful addition to your needlework. Ray Stitches can be worked individually or arranged in rows and groups to create attractive borders, floral accents, and decorative patterns.
This beginner counted embroidery course is designed for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen and would like to explore the world of specialty stitches. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern designed to help you practise your new skills.
One of the pleasures of the Ray Stitch is how easily a few straight stitches can create such an attractive design. When several stitches come together at a common point, you'll see a neat fan of threads that spreads gracefully across the fabric. I'll show you how to count the fabric threads, place each stitch accurately, and maintain even tension for a smooth, balanced appearance. Once you've mastered the basic stitch, you'll enjoy experimenting with different thread colours and arrangements to create your own decorative effects.
If you're new to counted stitching on linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. While Aida fabric is wonderful for ordinary cross stitching, linen gives you greater flexibility when working specialty stitches. Once you become comfortable counting linen threads, you'll discover how easy and enjoyable these decorative techniques can be!
Join me as we explore the Ray Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning something new, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
