Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Queen Stitch, sometimes called the Rococo Stitch, is a beautiful traditional counted embroidery stitch that creates a delicate, textured diamond-shaped motif. This elegant stitch has a long history in counted needlework and was especially popular in early American samplers. Its distinctive appearance comes from a series of long, carefully placed stitches that are secured with tiny holding stitches, creating a lovely raised effect. When worked in rows or groups, Queen Stitches form beautiful decorative patterns that add texture and interest to samplers and other needlework projects.
This intermediate counted embroidery course is designed for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen and are ready to expand their specialty stitching skills. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern designed to help you practise your new skills.
The Queen Stitch requires a little patience and careful attention to stitch placement, but the results are well worth the effort! Each stitch is built up gradually, with small holding stitches securing the longer threads to create its characteristic shape. You'll learn how to maintain even tension, keep your stitches neatly aligned, and work individual Queen Stitches into attractive groups and patterns. This lovely stitch is especially effective in decorative borders, geometric designs, and traditional samplers.
If you're new to counted stitching on linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. Working on linen makes it possible to count the fabric threads accurately and place each stitch exactly where it belongs. Once you're comfortable with counted stitching on linen, you'll discover a wonderful variety of specialty stitches to explore.
Join me as we explore the Queen Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning this beautiful traditional stitch, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
