Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Feather Stitch is a graceful and versatile surface embroidery stitch that creates delicate, branching lines resembling feathers, vines, or leafy stems. Also known as the Briar Stitch or the Single Coral Stitch, it is traditionally worked with embroidery threads, whether made of wool or cotton. This lovely stitch has a gently curving, open design, which makes it especially attractive for creating trailing foliage, decorative borders, and natural-looking accents in floral embroidery.
This course is designed for stitchers who would like to explore the beauty of free-form silk ribbon embroidery while learning a useful and decorative stitch. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Silk Ribbon and Stitching Basics. I'll show you how to form the alternating stitches, control the tension of your ribbon, and create graceful, flowing lines that give your embroidery a natural appearance.
One of the pleasures of the Feather Stitch is its versatility. You can work it in straight or gently curved lines, vary the spacing between stitches, or change the length of the branches to create different effects. It's particularly lovely when combined with silk ribbon flowers, where it can suggest delicate stems, fernlike leaves, or trailing vines. With a little practice, you'll discover how easily this stitch can add movement, texture, and charm to your needlework.
You don't need to know counted cross stitching on linen to enjoy this course. Free-form silk ribbon embroidery allows you to stitch more freely, following the shapes and curves of your design rather than counting fabric threads. It's a wonderful opportunity to experiment with colour, texture, and your own creative ideas!
Join me as we explore the Feather Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning something new, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
