Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

This is a stitch quite similar to the French Knot. The difference in this stitch is that it is more uniform and usually has a tighter look to it. which has enjoyed a resurgence since the late 1970’s
The Colonial Knot has been used in Candle wicking Embroidery for years. It is a charming decorative embroidery stitch that creates small, raised knots with a lovely rounded appearance. Similar to the French Knot, the Colonial Knot is formed by wrapping the ribbon or thread around the needle in a distinctive figure-eight motion. The result is a beautifully textured knot that adds dimension and interest to your embroidery. When worked with silk ribbon, these knots are especially attractive for creating tiny flower centres, delicate buds, and clusters of blossoms.
This course is designed for stitchers who would like to explore the beauty of silk ribbon embroidery and learn how to create decorative knots with confidence. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and Silk Ribbon Basics. I'll show you how to position your needle, make the special figure-eight wrap, and control the ribbon as you form each knot.
The Colonial Knot Stitch is a useful addition to your embroidery skills because it creates a neat, rounded knot that holds its shape beautifully. It can be used on its own or combined with other silk ribbon stitches to add texture and detail to flowers, leaves, and decorative borders. With a little practice, you'll discover how easy it is to create these lovely embellishments.
Join me as we explore the Colonial Knot Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning something new, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
