Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Lazy Daisy Stitch, also known as the Detached Chain Stitch, is a charming and versatile surface embroidery stitch that creates delicate loops resembling flower petals and leaves. This traditional embroidery stitch is especially popular in floral designs, where several stitches can be arranged around a central point to form a pretty little daisy. Each loop is held in place with a tiny anchoring stitch, giving it a softly rounded appearance. When worked with colourful embroidery threads, the Lazy Daisy Stitch adds lovely texture, dimension, and a cheerful touch to your needlework.
This intermediate free-form embroidery course is designed for stitchers who have some experience with basic surface embroidery and would like to expand their knowledge of decorative stitches. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics. I'll show you how to form each loop, secure it neatly with a small anchoring stitch, and control your thread tension to create beautifully shaped petals and leaves.
One of the pleasures of the Lazy Daisy Stitch is how easily it can be adapted to create different effects. By varying the length and shape of the loops, you can stitch tiny blossoms, graceful leaves, or larger decorative flowers. Arrange several stitches around a centre to create a daisy, or work individual stitches along a stem to suggest delicate foliage. You can also combine Lazy Daisy Stitches with French Knots, Stem Stitches, and other surface embroidery techniques to create lovely floral arrangements. Once you've mastered the basic stitch, you'll discover how much variety can be achieved with this simple and delightful technique!
You don't need to know counted cross stitching on linen to enjoy this course. Free-form embroidery allows you to work creatively on the surface of your fabric without counting threads or following a strict grid. The Lazy Daisy Stitch is a wonderful addition to your embroidery skills, especially if you enjoy stitching flowers, gardens, and other nature-inspired designs.
Join me as we explore the Lazy Daisy Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning this lovely traditional stitch, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
