Cross Stitch and Needle Arts / Beyond Cross Stitch
Taught by Thea Dueck

The Montenegrin Stitch is a beautiful traditional embroidery stitch used on both linen and canvas. Originating in the Montenegro region of the former Yugoslavia, it is similar to the Long-Armed Cross Stitch, with an additional straight stitch that gives it a distinctive appearance. Traditionally used to decorate Montenegrin folk costumes and textiles, this stitch is known for its precise workmanship and intricate geometric patterns.
This course is designed for stitchers who are already comfortable working counted cross stitches on linen. You'll enjoy step-by-step video lessons, along with helpful downloadable documents, including Stitching Basics and a special small cross stitch pattern designed to help you practise your new skills.
Download the pattern to gather your materials before stitching. You can find 28 count linen at a craft store (or online at any needlework shop). Get a magnifier light to help you see if needed.
If you're new to stitching on linen, I recommend taking my Introduction to Cross Stitching on Linen course first. While Aida fabric is wonderful for ordinary cross stitching, its construction makes it less suitable for many specialty stitches. Once you discover how easy it is to work on linen, you'll open the door to a whole new world of decorative stitching!
Join me as we explore the Montenegrin Stitch together, practising on a doodle cloth at your own pace. Enjoy learning something new, and feel free to share your stitching progress and finished work on social media. I'd love to see what you create!
